Royal
was founded in 1900 as a site for a Rock Island Railroad depot.
Having started with 18 businesses and less than 300 people, presently
it is home to approximately 42 businesses and 479 residents. Main
Street contains a bank, grocery store and restaurant, library,
cafe and post office, as well as other businesses. Clay Central
Everly Middle and Grade school, south site, are also located in
Royal. There are three churches in town; United Methodist, Bethlehem
Lutheran and St. Louis Catholic. Located 13 miles southwest of
Spencer, Royal is noted for its rich black soil and friendly people.
Today it is a prosperous and busy farming community.
